AT&T Agrees to Unlock iPhones with No Contract

The announcement comes on the heels of AT&T acquiescing to a directive in February by Apple CEO Tim Cook to unlock an iPhone with a finished contract from a man who had been reassigned to Canada for his work. This man, who has a wife and four children who all use Apple products, contacted AT&T with hopes that the telecommunications giant would unlock his device but AT&T customer service staff, including a supervisor said that they couldnt honor his request and instead suggested that he jailbreak his iPhone. Frustrated by AT&Ts unwillingness to help him, he wrote a letter to Tim Cook as a last measure. Here is a portion of the letter.

I didnt want to jailbreak my phone, I like Apples curated experience and I dont want to stray from that. However after several more calls to both AT&T and Apple, I made no progress. So Im turning to you for a final plea.

Beginning Sunday, April 8, we will offer qualifying customers the ability to unlock their AT&T iPhones. The only requirements are that a customers account must be in good standing, their device cannot be associated with a current and active term commitment on an AT&T customer account, and they need to have fulfilled their contract term, upgraded under one of our upgrade policies or paid an early termination fee.

In an announcement that is guaranteed to please many current iPhone users, AT&T has agreed to unlock iPhones when a contract agreement has been fulfilled. For many disgruntled customers of AT&T, this means they will be free to choose their own carrier once their agreement is up. Previously if you wanted an unlocked iPhone with no contract, you would have been forced to pay $649 from the Apple Store for this feature or you had to illegally "jailbreak" the device.

This action may have triggered a much broader policy to allow all iPhone users to unlock their devices once their contract with AT&T has expired. The new policy change will make switching GSM networks a breeze for companies that support Apples mobile devices such as T-Mobile for voice connections and EDGE data connections. Two other carriers to consider if you want to make the switch are H20 Wireless and Freedom Pop, who both jailbreak guides stand to reap rewards from the AT&T announcement.

However if you are still locked into a contract and still want to take advantage of this new option, youll have to cough up an early termination fee. As you can see from the official statement from AT&T, this policy went into effect today.

However iPhone users will not be able to switch to Sprint or Verizon because these two carriers utilize a different network from AT&T and T-Mobile known as CDMA. Even still, the AT&T announcement is a victory for consumers. So if your contract happens to end today and youre like countless numbers of customers who are unhappy with AT&T, you can simply walk away from them.

My company recently moved me to Canada for a work assignment for a few years. My wifes iPhone 3GS had finished its contract with AT&T so I bought her an iPhone 4 the day we moved to Canada. I took her iPhone 3GS and I contacted AT&T to see if I could have it unlocked so that I could use the phone with a Canadian carrier with a pay as you go plan for casual use (Im forced to use a Blackberry for work, but I hate it so Id like to use the iPhone for phone calls). This is where my problems began.

Tim Cook responded by sending off an email to AT&T to make an exception to this individual. Shortly thereafter, an AT&T representative contacted the man and informed him that after receiving the correspondence from the Apple CEO, they agreed to make an exception. Cooks executive assistant at Apples headquarters in Cupertino followed up by calling the man to ensure that his iPhone was, inded, unlocked.

Basically AT&T told me that they couldnt unlock it, only Apple could. I called Apple (but was routed through Apple Canada) and they told me ask to talk to a supervisor at AT&T because the customer service rep wont know the process, but AT&T definitely can unlock it. So I called them back and the supervisor was adamant that they couldnt help me. Just jailbreak your phone was their advice.
